GME facilities on Islay:
There is a GME unit in Bowmore Primary School with 2 children in GM Nursery and 17 pupils in P1-P7. There is one full-time GME teacher and two part-time GME teachers. There has been a vacancy for a second GME teacher since January 2005 with no applications as yet.
In Islay High School there are 5 pupils. The High School have Gàidhlig, History and Geography (On-line) for the 4 S2s but only Gàidhlig for the S1 due to there being only one part-time Gaelic teacher for the fluent pupils. The High School also have Gaelic Learners classes. -
Main Activities of CnPI&D:
The committee has been actively seeking a second GME teacher for Bowmore Primary School. We have set up a website for the job on www.diura.com. Our petition PE857 for provision of more Gaelic Teachers is still "live" at the Scottish Parliament and will be heard again on 25th January 2006. It was first heard in May 2005 when our children visited the Scottish Parliament buildings in Edinburgh to present the petition.
We helped at an OPEN DAY on Saturday 14 January along with Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle to promote the various Gaelic groups and child care facilities: Fàs Mòr Ìle, Sradagan Ìle, Comann nam Pàrant Ìle & Dhiura, ICCIs Gaelic classes etc. There was moderate interest from a number of parents and the children had fun on a bouncy castle, face paints and games.
We have our AGM in May each year and meet several times a year to update members on relevant issues.
